gaia noir

Dreadlock Colours, Fabrics and Other Materials

Gaia Noir cotton fabrics are certified fair trade and organic (OEKOTEX, Soil Association or GOTS - see the supplier's site for more information). The cotton is dyed and handwoven in small workshops in Kerala, India. The reasoning behind this is common sense: hundreds of people in the cotton industry are still killed every year through handling lethal pesticides, but these deaths are avoidable. To buy fairtrade and organic is (amongst other things) to agree that anyone who works hard at their job a) deserves to be paid properly for it, and b) shouldn't be poisoned to death by it.

Happily, there are increasingly huge numbers of affordable and beautiful ethical fabrics available nowadays, and there's a wide selection to choose.   (note: Gaia Noir generally does not work with materials which are very ecologically harmful or unethical, like PVC or real fur). Examples of other fabrics I can use (depending on availability) are: vintage/upcycled fabrics, hemp, wool and organic wool, bamboo fleece, bamboo silk, organic cotton net, bamboo or soybean jersey, or fabrics made from recycled materials.
Dreadlock Colours
All of the Gaia Noir dreads are made from New Zealand merino wool or UK organic merino wool, available in these colours:

Organic & Fairtrade Cotton Fabric

lightweight fabric, good for bloomers and tops. There can be slight colour variation between different dye batches and slight changes in fabric texture - this is because this beautiful cotton does not come from a factory, but is dyed in individual batches and handwoven for a lovely old fashioned feel ahunt
